Typical positions on board a 45 metre superyacht

 

Deckhands are responsible for all the deck work required to run the yacht including cleaning, sail handling, sanding & varnishing, light maintenance etc. Yearly Salary range is up to $49,000.

Bosuns oversee the deckhands and report to the chief mate. Yearly salary up to $60,000.

First Mates are the captain's right hand man and is second in command. If the captain is not available then the chief mate takes responsibility for the vessel. Yearly Salary range is up to $140,000.

Captains are responsible for the safety of the vessel and the well being of all those on board. They answer to the owner of the yacht. Yearly Salary range is up to $250,000.

Stewards or Stewardesses answer to the Purser and carry out the duties to maintain the interior of the yacht including living quarters, bedrooms, dining room, heads (marine toilets), showers, wardrobes, bars, service at meals and the comfort of guests at all times. Yearly salary is up to $56,000.

Pursers or Chief Stewardesses answer directly to the captain and are responsible for the interior management of the stewards and stewardesses. Duties include liaising with guests and looking after their individual tastes and preferences. Also work in conjunction with the chef in regard to provisioning. Yearly salary is up to $110,000.

Sous Chefs answer to the chef and assist the chef with all culinary duties. On larger yachts the sous chef will often cook for the crew. Yearly salary is up to $84,000.

Chefs answer to the captain in conjunction with the purser. The chef is responsible for the planning, purchasing and preparation of all meals and beverages for the guests, from coffee preparation through to full gourmet meals. Yearly salary is up to $140,000.

Second Engineers answer to the chief engineer and in the absence of the chief engineer will assume his duties. The second engineers assist the chief engineer with the maintenance of the mechanical and electronic equipment on board the vessel. Second engineers also stand watch in the engine room when the vessel is operating under power. Yearly salary is up to $100,000.

Chief Engineers report to the captain directly and are responsible for the management of the engineering staff and all the mechanical and electronic equipment on board the vessel. Yearly salary is up to $140,000.
